Alexander De Croo served as Prime Minister of Belgium from 2020 to 2025, leading a governing coalition known as the Vivaldi cabinet. Early Career and Business Foundation
Born in 1975 in Vilvoorde, De Croo pursued engineering studies before moving to the United States. He graduated from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 1998 with a degree in business engineering and later earned an MBA from Northwestern University. His professional life began at the Boston Consulting Group in 1999. In 2006, he founded Darts-ip, a company focused on providing services for intellectual property professionals.

De Croo entered politics in 2009 by standing in the European elections. Later that year, he secured the presidency of the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats party. His early leadership involved significant instability; he withdrew his party from the governing coalition in 2010 due to disputes over the Brussels-Halle-Vilvoorde voting issue, which triggered the collapse of the government led by Yves Leterme. He subsequently served as a member of the Chamber of Representatives and as a Senator.
Ministerial Roles and Government Service
Between 2012 and 2020, De Croo held various high-level positions in the cabinets of Elio Di Rupo, Charles Michel, and Sophie Wilmès. As Minister of Development Cooperation, he supported initiatives such as the She Decides movement and pledged funds to combat African sleeping sickness. During his tenure as Minister of Finance starting in 2018, he worked within a minority government structure. His service included overseeing COVID-19 stimulus measures and financial rescue packages for Brussels Airlines.
Premiership and Later Developments
Taking office as Prime Minister in October 2020, De Croo presided over a cabinet notable for having the highest proportion of women ministers in Belgian history. His administration implemented labor reforms, including the introduction of a flexible four-day work week. Following the 2024 federal elections, he announced his resignation in June. He remained a caretaker head of government until he was succeeded by Bart De Wever in February 2025. In 2024, he received the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 1st class.
