Dargomyzhsky’s first opera, Esmeralda, was composed in 1839 based on the Victor Hugo novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, though it did not reach the stage until 1847. His 1856 opera, Rusalka, helped solidify his position within the Russian musical scene. Despite these efforts, he maintained a relatively low profile until the 1860s, eventually gaining status as an elder statesman among the circle of composers later identified as The Five.
The Stone Guest and Final Years
His final operatic project, The Stone Guest, serves as his most significant contribution to the medium, particularly for its use of melodic recitative. The work remained incomplete at the time of his death in 1869, leaving the orchestration and the conclusion of the first scene unfinished. César Cui and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov eventually completed the score, which premiered in 1872. Beyond his operatic scores, he produced a variety of piano pieces, orchestral works, and numerous songs.
