Early Development and Saloon Racing
Born on 20 July 1976 at the Sambhi Clinic, Yoong began his career in 1992 at age 16. Initially competing in saloon cars, he became the youngest driver in Malaysian motorsport history. He achieved early success in the Proton one-make series and secured a third-place finish in the 1600cc class at the Macau Guia Race. His rise continued with a 400-horsepower DTM-spec BMW before he pivoted toward single-seater racing in 1994.

Yoong moved into the Formula Asia International Championship with a loan and earned his first win at Zhuhai. By 1995, he secured the Malaysian national crown. Attempts to break into European series proved difficult, marked by stints in Formula Renault and Formula Three with Portman Racing and Alan Docking Racing. Financial instability forced his father to fund his career, leading to significant personal debt, though consistent finishes in 1999 enabled a move to the Italian Formula 3000 championship.
Formula One and Later Career
Joining Minardi for the 2001 Italian Grand Prix, Yoong represented Malaysia on the Formula One grid until 2002. Following his departure, he pursued opportunities in the CART World Series, the Porsche Carrera Cup, and the V8 Supercars. Between 2005 and 2008, he competed in the A1 Grand Prix series, earning three victories. His post-driving career included a role as head of driver development for Lotus Racing and broadcasting work as a commentator for Fox Sports Asia.
