Academic and Engineering Foundation
Balandin completed his secondary education in Fryazino in 1970 before enrolling at the Bauman Moscow State Technical University. In 1976, he graduated with a degree specializing in Flight Dynamics and Control. Following his studies, he entered the workforce as an engineer in the Moscow region, specifically employed at the Scientific Production Association Energy.

On December 1, 1978, he joined the cosmonaut detachment as part of the fifth recruitment group of civilian specialists from SPA Energia. His training curriculum between 1979 and 1984 focused on the Buran reusable spacecraft, as well as the Soyuz-TM series and the Mir space station. By September 1989, he served as the flight engineer for the backup crew assigned to Soyuz TM-8. He ultimately served as a flight engineer aboard Soyuz TM-9.
Professional Transition and Recognition
Balandin maintained his employment at NPO Energia until 1994, the same year he retired from the cosmonaut program on October 17. Following his departure from the space agency, he transitioned into the private sector, serving as the President of the Lendint-Association until 2000. Throughout his career, he received multiple state honors, including the Hero of the Soviet Union, the Order of Lenin, the title of Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR, the Medal For Merit in Space Exploration, and the Order of Bernardo O'Higgins.
