Aleksandr Mikhailovich Lyapunov established the foundational principles of stability theory, transforming how scientists analyze dynamical systems. Academic Foundation
Lyapunov attended the Nizhny Novgorod Gymnasium between 1870 and 1876 before enrolling at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Saint Petersburg University. During his studies from 1876 to 1880, he worked under the guidance of Chebyshev and D. K. Bobylev. His early research focused on hydrostatics, culminating in his 1880 gold medal-winning study on the equilibrium of bodies in heavy fluids.
Stability and Dynamical Systems
His primary research, the stability of ellipsoidal forms of rotating fluids, served as his master's thesis in 1884. This inquiry expanded into his 1892 doctoral thesis, The general problem of the stability of motion. Lyapunov introduced rigorous methods for defining the equilibrium of mechanical systems, establishing concepts now identified as Lyapunov stability, the Lyapunov function, and the Lyapunov exponent.
Professional Tenure
In 1884, he joined the National University of Kharkiv, serving as a professor and eventually chairperson from 1899 to 1902. He returned to Imperial St. Petersburg University in 1902 to succeed Chebyshev. Throughout his career, he remained an active researcher in probability theory and potential theory, while also contributing to the editing of Euler's selected works.
Final Years
In 1917, Lyapunov moved to Odesa to support his ailing wife, who suffered from tuberculosis. Following her death on 31 October 1918, Lyapunov took his own life. He died in Odesa on 3 November 1918 and was buried at the 2nd Christian Cemetery. By the time of his death, he had suffered from advancing cataracts.
