A sketch by Aleksander Orłowski captures the fluid movement of military engagements and daily life, establishing his role as a precursor to lithographic production in the Russian Empire. Born in 1777 in Warsaw, he transitioned from the son of a tavern-keeper to a professional presence in the artistic circles of two distinct imperial capitals.
Early Training and Military Service
Orłowski displayed early talent, which allowed him to secure financial support for artistic instruction under Jan Piotr Norblin, provided by Izabela Czartoryska. During the 1793 Kościuszko Uprising, he joined the Polish Army to fight against forces from Imperial Russia and Prussia. Sustaining injuries during the conflict, he returned to Warsaw to continue his formal education, supported by Prince Józef Poniatowski. His training expanded under the guidance of Marcello Bacciarelli and Wincenty Lesserowicz.
