Alain M. Robert

Swiss mathematician

The dissertation submitted by Alain M. Robert in 1967 at the University of Neuchâtel, titled Quelques Questions d'Espaces Vectoriels Topologiques, established the foundation for his long academic career. As a mathematician based in Switzerland, Robert focused on the formal study of mathematical structures and university teaching throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Academic Foundation and Research

Alain M. Robert completed his doctoral studies under the supervision of Roger Bader. His early work centered on topological vector spaces, a field that characterized his transition into advanced mathematical research. Throughout his tenure at the University of Neuchâtel, he remained an active member of the Swiss Mathematical Society, contributing to a body of work that bridged the gap between highly specialized research monographs and broader educational texts.

Contributions to Mathematical Literature

Robert published several influential books covering diverse areas of mathematics. In 1973, Springer-Verlag issued his notes on elliptic curves, derived from lectures held in Lausanne. His 1983 work, Introduction to the representation theory of compact and locally compact groups, appeared in the London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series. He later published a text on nonstandard analysis in 1988, which he translated into English himself, and his 2005 book, Linear Algebra: Examples and Applications, provided further pedagogical reach.

Recognition in p-adic Analysis

His publication A course in p-adic analysis, released by Springer-Verlag in 2000, gained significant attention in the mathematical community. Reviewer Daniel Barsky noted that the book occupied a unique position in the marketplace by synthesizing research results previously restricted to scattered articles and preprints. By 2012, this specific volume had accrued over 300 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting its sustained utility for students and researchers.

Professional Life and Legacy

Born in 1941, Robert spent his career as a university teacher in his native Switzerland. Beyond his books, he co-authored papers on specific number theory topics, such as a 1996 article on Bell numbers written with Anne Gertsch. He died in 2025 at the age of 84, leaving behind a substantial record of academic output and university-level instruction.
