Fifty-two percent of all Russian metal production originated from the industrial empire managed by Akinfiy Nikitich Demidov by the middle of the eighteenth century. As the eldest son of Nikita Demidov, he expanded his family’s commercial holdings into a dominant force within the Russian Empire, eventually becoming the wealthiest individual in the nation behind the Tsar himself.
Industrial Expansion and Metallurgy
Demidov acquired technical expertise regarding metallurgical production while studying in Saxony. Upon his return, he aggressively expanded his operational capacity, establishing nine steel foundries and munitions factories between 1717 and 1735. By the time of his death, this number had increased to twenty-five facilities. To ensure a steady supply for these plants, he developed extensive iron and copper mines, alongside extraction sites for gold, silver, and precious stones.

In 1720, the Demidov family received a letter of nobility from Tsar Peter the Great following the purchase of an estate in the Barminskaya volost. This honor acknowledged his significant contributions to the state. His political influence grew steadily, leading to his appointment as State Councillor in 1740 and Privy Councillor in 1744. Empress Elizaveta Petrovna further bolstered his status by granting the brothers exemptions from various taxes and compulsory military service.
Architectural and Religious Patronage
Beyond his industrial pursuits, Demidov engaged in significant construction projects. He commissioned the Leaning Tower of Nevyansk, a structure notable for its inclusion of underground chambers and covert passages that linked directly to his factory sites. In 1734, he demonstrated his role as a patron by founding the Nicholas-Zaretsky Church in the city of Tula.
