The career of Agostino Steffani, born in Castelfranco Veneto in 1654, spanned the dual spheres of Baroque musical composition and high-stakes European diplomacy. Balancing his roles as a Catholic priest and auxiliary bishop with his duties as a court official, he exerted significant influence on the development of dramatic music while serving various royal patrons across Germany.
Early Training and Munich Appointments
As a boy, Steffani served as a chorister at San Marco in Venice. By age thirteen, he moved to Munich under the patronage of Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria, receiving musical instruction from Johann Kaspar Kerll and later Ercole Bernabei. He was appointed court organist in 1675. During this period, he produced his first work, Psalmodia vespertina, while refining his skills in vocal and instrumental performance.

In 1688, Steffani accepted the position of chapelmaster at the court of Hanover under Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg. He composed numerous operas for the new local theatre, including Henrico Leone, Niobe, regina di Tebe, and Orlando generoso. His compositions often combined Italian melodic elegance with a structural precision reflective of French influence. These scores were later preserved in the royal library at Buckingham Palace.
Diplomacy and Late Ecclesiastical Career
Steffani's responsibilities expanded into state affairs in 1696 when he served as an envoy extraordinary for the Electorate. He was consecrated bishop of Spiga and later served as the Vicar Apostolic of Upper and Lower Saxony between 1709 and 1723, and again from 1726 to 1728. Despite his elevated status within the Catholic Church, he continued his musical involvement, maintaining professional connections in London and Rome until his death in Frankfurt.
