Beginning in 1807, Bassi tracked a devastating condition affecting silkworms known as mal del segno or muscardine. The disease, which appeared in Italy by 1805 and reached France by 1841, threatened the collapse of silk production. After decades of analysis, he published Del mal del segno, calcinaccio o moscardino in 1835. He identified a parasitic fungus, later named Beauveria bassiana, as the cause. To save the industry, he introduced systematic farm sanitation, including the destruction of infected caterpillars and the use of chemical disinfectants.
Development of Germ Theory
Bassi extended his findings on silkworms to propose a broader biological principle: that contagion in plants, animals, and humans arises from pathogenic microorganisms. In 1844, he argued that conditions such as syphilis, measles, and the plague were triggered by similar living entities. This work served as a precursor to the scientific contributions of Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch. Beyond his primary focus, he published research regarding the cultivation of potatoes, wine production, leprosy, and cheese manufacturing.
Death and Legacy
Agostino Bassi died in 1856 in Lodi and was interred at the San Francesco Church. His influence persisted through the later efforts of Louis Pasteur, who kept portraits of both Bassi and Spallanzani in his office. In 1953, the Italian post office recognized his contributions by issuing a commemorative stamp featuring his likeness alongside silkmoth pupae and adults.
