Five million copies of the 1984 album Made in Thailand solidified Yuenyong Opakul, known professionally as Aed Carabao, as a household name. A prolific singer-songwriter with over 900 compositions to his credit, he bridges the worlds of rock music, television, and architecture while maintaining an active role in commenting on Thai social and political affairs.
Early Influences and Education
Born in 1954 in Tambon Tha Phi Liang, Suphan Buri, Yuenyong grew up in a middle-class Teochew Chinese family. His father, Manus Opakul, worked as a look thung band manager and writer, exposing him to folk music and traditional arts from a young age. After initial schooling at Wat Suwan, he moved to Bangkok to study architecture at Uthenthawai Vocational School. He later spent one year completing his architectural education at Mapúa University in the Philippines.

While studying in the Philippines, Yuenyong met fellow Thai students Kirati Promsaka Na Sakon Nakhon and Sanit Limsila. They bonded over Western rock acts like Led Zeppelin and the Eagles, eventually forming a band named Carabao. Upon returning to Thailand, the trio performed at venues such as the Windsor Hotel and the Hotel Mandarin Samyan. Their commitment to music eventually led to them losing their respective day jobs, forcing them to pursue performance full-time.
Rise to National Prominence
Yuenyong initially worked in architectural design, including projects for the National Housing Authority. His career in music began to gain traction when he produced records for the group Hammer in 1979 and composed the song Teuk Kwaai Tui. The band Carabao struggled for commercial success following their 1981 debut album, Kee Mao, but their fortunes shifted with the 1984 release of Made in Thailand, which vaulted them to massive national popularity.
Social and Political Commentary
Beyond music, Yuenyong frequently uses his platform to address public events. His discography includes songs inspired by the Black May 1992 uprising, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and various national political crises. He has also engaged in public service through the Carabao Foundation, teaching songwriting and performance to youth through the Dontri Sang Khunkha Chiwit project and the television program Bao Young Blood.
