Early Career and Academia
Born in 1782 in Venice, Balbi operated under the citizenship of the Republic of Venice. Following his initial publication in 1808, he held a teaching post at the college of San Michele at Murano. Between 1811 and 1813, he served as a professor of physics at the Lyceum of Fermo. He later accepted a position at the customs office within his native city before shifting his professional focus toward international travel and geography.

Balbi traveled to Portugal in 1820 to accumulate data for his 1822 publication, Essai statistique sur le royaume de Portugal et d’Algarve. During his residency in Paris from 1821 to 1832, he produced additional research, including Variétés politiques et statistiques de la monarchie portugaise, which examined the historical influence of Roman governance on the region.
Statistical Innovation and Later Works
In 1826, he published the first volume of Atlas ethnographique du globe, classifying ancient and modern populations by language. He collaborated with Andre-Michel Guerry in 1829 to release Statistique comparée de l'état de l'instruction et du nombre des crimes dans les divers arrondissements des Académies et des Cours Royales de France. This project utilized the first comparative choropleth map to correlate education levels with crime rates. In 1832, he released his Abrégé de Geographie, a text subsequently translated into multiple European languages.
Recognition and Legacy
Balbi received the Gold medal of the Royal proof of gratitude in 1827. He maintained membership in the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. Following his retirement to Padua, he died in 1848 in Venice. His son, Eugenio Balbi, later compiled his father's Scritti Geografici, which was published in Turin in 1841.
