Adriaen van der Werff

Dutch painter (1659–1722)

A commission for the Medici family in 1696 helped secure Adriaen van der Werff’s status as a premier court painter within the Dutch Republic. His technical precision across portraits, mythology, and religious scenes earned him a significant reputation and wealth, eventually leading to his appointment as a knight and court painter to the Elector Palatine, Johann Wilhelm.

Early Career and Training

Born in Kralingen in 1659, Van der Werff began formal instruction at age ten. Two years later, he entered the studio of Eglon van der Neer to master the depiction of drapery and clothing. By age seventeen, he established his own studio in Rotterdam and subsequently ascended to lead the local Guild of Saint Luc.

Courtly Patronage and European Success

The artist transitioned between Rotterdam and Düsseldorf to serve Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, beginning in 1703. His output for the Elector included numerous biblical and erotic classical subjects, which were highly valued and displayed alongside works by Rembrandt. Beyond these royal commissions, he executed portraits of notable figures such as John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, and Gian Gastone de' Medici.

Architecture and Later Years

Van der Werff also worked as an architect and sculptor, contributing to the design of houses in Rotterdam. His brother, Pieter van der Werff, served as his primary assistant and student. Following the death of his patron Johann Wilhelm in 1716, the artist faced financial uncertainty as the new Elector, Charles III Philip, struggled with an empty treasury. Van der Werff died in Rotterdam in 1722.

Critical Reception and Legacy

In 1718, biographer Arnold Houbraken described him as the preeminent Dutch painter, a sentiment that persisted throughout the 18th century. During the Victorian era, however, his reputation waned as critics perceived his style as a departure from the Dutch naturalistic tradition, causing much of his work to be relegated to museum storage. His pieces are currently held in institutions including the Rijksmuseum, the Alte Pinakothek, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum.
