Adolf Jandorf established a retail empire in Germany by redefining the reach of the department store. Born in Wallhausen in 1870, he transitioned from a humble background into a central figure of German commerce. Through strategic expansion and the implementation of modern sales techniques, he built the foundation for some of the most prominent retail spaces in Berlin.
Early Business Ventures
Jandorf began his professional life after an apprenticeship in Bad Mergentheim. During the early 1890s, he operated under the textile firm M. J. Emden Söhne. By 1892, he secured an advance of 500 marks to establish a retail presence in Berlin. He quickly opened a store at Spittelmarkt, naming it A. Jandorf & Co. Despite initial friction regarding the business name and market pressures, he successfully consolidated his operations.

Jandorf prioritized prime locations, often selecting street corners to maximize visibility. In 1897, he commissioned architect Fritz Flatow to build a store at Belle-Alliance-Strasse, a two-story structure featuring a neo-baroque facade. Further branches opened in Friedrichshain in 1901 and near Brunnenstrasse in 1904. By 1906, his acquisition of a reinforced concrete building at Kottbusser Damm solidified his position among the top ten department store entrepreneurs in the country.
The Kaufhaus des Westens
The establishment of the Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) represented a shift toward high-end retail. While the venture began in 1905 with smaller investments, Jandorf became the primary shareholder in 1906 with a contribution of 1,921,000 marks, backed by Deutsche Bank. Designed by Johann Emil Schaudt, the store featured advanced infrastructure, including pneumatic tubes and diverse amenities such as tea rooms and travel services. Following a successful advertising campaign, the store opened on 27 March 1907.
