Adolf Furtwängler

German classical archaeologist (1853-1907)

The methodology established by Adolf Furtwängler in his 1879 publication, Mykenische Thongefäße, transformed archaeology by utilizing pottery sherds as a chronological tool for dating sites. By distinguishing between Mycenaean and Geometric styles, he created a rigorous framework that elevated classical archaeology from speculative art history into a disciplined, evidence-based science.

Academic Formation and Early Research

Born in 1853 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Furtwängler studied at the University of Freiburg, Leipzig University, and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. A pupil of Heinrich Brunn, he refined a comparative method in art criticism. Between 1876 and 1878, a scholarship from the German Archaeological Institute facilitated his research in Italy and Greece. In 1878, he joined Ernst Curtius during excavations at Olympia.

Contributions to Berlin Archaeology

In 1880, Furtwängler accepted dual positions as an assistant director at the Antikensammlung Berlin and as a privatdozent at the University of Berlin. His work focused on the detailed classification of artifacts, notably producing the 1883–87 catalogue of the Saburov collection and the 1885 two-volume catalogue of Greek pottery in the Antikensammlung. These works established his reputation for precise connoisseurship.

Sculpture and Analytical Publishing

His 1893 work, Meisterwerke der griechischen Plastik, solidified his influence, providing new attributions for Greek sculptors through the examination of Roman copies. In 1894, he moved to Munich to serve as professor of classical archaeology and Director of the Munich Glyptothek. His research output remained prolific, spanning the 1900 study of Greek engraved gems, Die Antiken Gemmen, and the initiation of the monumental Griechische Vasenmalerei in 1904.

Final Excavations and Legacy

Furtwängler resumed excavations at the temple of Aphaia in Aegina, concluding the project with a 1906 monograph. While working at the site, he contracted dysentery and died in Athens in 1907. He was buried at the First Cemetery of Athens. In 1906, his contributions were formally acknowledged with the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art.
