On 10 February 1896, Gabriela de la Caridad Azcuy Labrador joined the militia of Miguel Lores near Gramales to serve as an army medic. Although often recognized for her contributions to nursing, her life included training in horsemanship and hunting in rural Cuba before she entered the volatile political landscape of the late nineteenth century.
Early Life and Education
Born on 18 March 1861 in Viñales, she spent her early years on a farm in San Cayetano until 1865. Her upbringing included exposure to hunting, the operation of firearms, and equestrian skills at her grandmother's residence. In 1886, she married Jorge Monzón Cosculluela, who held a Bachelor in Pharmacy. This union provided her with practical experience in the preparation of medications and the management of physical trauma, as she functioned as his assistant. Following the death of her husband during a smallpox outbreak on 17 January 1891, she later entered a marriage with Castor del Moral, a Spanish employee of the same pharmaceutical business. This second marriage ultimately failed due to conflicting views regarding the political trajectory of the nation.

Her decision to enlist with the guerrilla forces of Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Lores in 1896 marked a transition from civilian pharmaceutical work to active combat support. Her medical proficiency proved critical during the Cuban War of Independence. General Lorente documented her conduct during a 1897 engagement at Las Cañas, located between Guane and Mantua. During the fighting, she dismounted her horse to provide medical assistance to the wounded while the situation remained dangerous enough that other physicians had retreated from the field. For her service, she attained the rank of Captain.
Post-War Transition
Following the conclusion of the war, she redirected her efforts toward civic administration. She secured a position as the Secretary of the Board of Education within her birthplace of Viñales. She died on 15 March 1914 in Havana at the age of 52.
