This performance established his credentials as a premier sprint kayaker, eventually leading to a career in federal politics as a representative in Canada’s House of Commons.
Athletic Trajectory
Born in Toronto in 1982 to parents Joe and Beata, Van Koeverden honed his skills at the Burloak Canoe Club in Oakville, Ontario. His ascent began with a bronze at the 1999 world junior championships in Zagreb, followed by a world junior marathon title in 2000. By 2003, he transitioned to senior competition, winning silver at the world championships in Gainesville. Over his career, he accumulated four Olympic medals and eight world championship medals, including gold victories in the K-1 500m in 2007 and the K-1 1000m in 2011. At the 2008 Beijing Games, he claimed silver in the K-1 500m while setting a world record time of 1:35.554. His final Olympic appearance occurred at the 2016 Rio Games, where he placed ninth overall.

Prior to his extensive international competition schedule, Van Koeverden pursued formal education in Ontario. He attended St. John Catholic Elementary School, graduating in 1996, and continued his studies at St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic Secondary School. He later enrolled at McMaster University in Hamilton, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. In June 2007, he served as the valedictorian for his graduating class.
Parliamentary Service
In 2018, Van Koeverden announced his candidacy for the Liberal Party of Canada. He successfully contested the riding of Milton in the 2019 federal election, unseating the incumbent Conservative deputy leader Lisa Raitt with 51% of the vote. He was re-elected in 2021 and subsequently for the newly formed riding of Burlington North-Milton West in 2025. Between 2023 and 2025, he functioned as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and the Minister of Sport and Physical Activity. Following the 2025 election, he was appointed Secretary of State for Sport in the 30th Canadian Ministry.
