The Dutch East Indies team qualified for the 1938 FIFA World Cup after Japan withdrew from the qualifying process. Nawir served as captain during their tournament match against Hungary, which resulted in a 6–0 defeat. His presence on the field was notable for his use of eyeglasses, making him one of the few individuals to wear them in a World Cup fixture. His opposing captain during the match, György Sárosi, also held a doctorate degree.
International Tenure and Legacy
The international career of Nawir was limited to two appearances. Following the World Cup, he played in a friendly match against the Netherlands, which ended in a 9–2 loss. These two games represented the final international outings for the Dutch East Indies before the region transitioned into the independent nation of Indonesia in 1945.
