Early Career and National Transitions
Born on 5 July 1990 in Adigrat, Ethiopia, Aregawi emerged as a competitive runner in 2009 by winning the Ethiopian 800-metre title. She secured a bronze medal at the 2009 African Junior Athletics Championships. After residing in Stockholm between 2009 and 2012, she gained Swedish citizenship. Representing Ethiopia until December 2012, she later competed for the Stockholm-based club Hammarby IF until 2016.

In 2012, Aregawi became a dominant force on the IAAF Diamond League circuit, winning the overall 1500m title. During that season, she set an Ethiopian national record of 3:56.54 at the Golden Gala. Upon transitioning to represent Sweden in 2013, she claimed gold at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg. That same year, she set a Swedish national record of 3:56.60 in Doha and a Swedish 800m record of 1:59.20 in Hengelo. Her success culminated in a gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.
Olympic Reallocation and Suspension
Aregawi competed in the 1500m at the 2012 Summer Olympics, where she initially finished fifth. Following the disqualification of the top finishers for doping violations, she was re-allocated the silver medal in 2024. In early 2016, she tested positive for meldonium, leading to a provisional suspension. While the Swedish Doping Commission lifted this suspension in July 2016 citing insufficient evidence, the Swedish Athletics Association eventually struck her from the active list in November 2018.
Return to Competition
Following a nine-year absence from professional athletics, Aregawi resumed racing in 2024 with two road 10K events. In March 2025, she completed the Lisbon Half Marathon in 1:06:36, setting a new Swedish record for the distance. She announced intentions to compete in upcoming European and World Championships.
