Early Career and Diplomatic Foundation
Born in Tehran in 1962, Araghchi served nine years in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Iran–Iraq War. He entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1989. His early international postings included serving as chargé d'affaires to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Saudi Arabia. He subsequently served as Iran's ambassador to Finland from 1999 to 2003 and later as the ambassador to Japan between 2008 and 2011. Araghchi rose to prominence as a key figure in nuclear diplomacy, acting as Iran's chief negotiator during the talks that preceded the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Following his time as a deputy foreign minister, he briefly stepped away from public office before being appointed secretary of the Strategic Council on Foreign Relations in 2021. As foreign minister, he has managed complex regional dynamics, including high-profile meetings with Taliban leaders in Afghanistan and leadership within Hamas.

Throughout his tenure, Araghchi has remained a firm representative of the Iranian state. In 2025, he dismissed proposals regarding Iran's potential involvement in the Abraham Accords as wishful thinking.
