Aaron Peirsol earned a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2000 Sydney Olympics at age seventeen, marking his arrival as a premier force in competitive swimming. Throughout his career, he secured thirty-six major international medals, establishing himself as a dominant backstroke specialist and a fixture of the United States national team across three Olympic Games.
Formative Training
Raised in Newport Beach, Peirsol began training at age five under Stacy Zapolski at the Newport-Costa Mesa YMCA. By age twelve, he joined the Irvine Novaquatics to train with coach Dave Salo. His development was rapid; in July 1996, he set a national age-group record for the 100-meter backstroke with a 1:03.6 performance, followed by a 2:05.42 record in the 200-meter event at age fourteen.

Peirsol attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he competed in the Big 12 Conference for coaches Eddie Reese and Kris Kubik. He captured NCAA titles in the 200-meter backstroke in 2003 and 2004. Recognized for his collegiate performance, he was named the 2003 NCAA Swimmer of the Year before graduating in 2006 with a degree in Political Science.
International Dominance
Following his initial Olympic silver in 2000, Peirsol transitioned to professional competition, signing with Nike, Inc. He excelled at the 2003 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, winning gold in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events. His 2003 performance in the 4×100-meter medley relay helped set a world record of 3:31.54 alongside teammates Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker, and Jason Lezak.
Advocacy and Charity
