Two contestants came from the same Hanoi school, one from a provincial gifted school in the Central Highlands, and all four returned with awards — the mark of a squad without a weak link rather than one carried by a single star. Vietnam finished eighth behind China, South Korea, the United States, Malaysia, Japan, Poland and Türkiye.
What the competition actually tests is narrower than the word programming implies. Every silver and gold medallist can implement standard data structures from memory; the difference at the top is problem triage under a hard clock. Contestants must decide within the opening minutes of a five-hour round which of three problems conceals a solvable idea and where the cheap partial credit sits, then commit. Get that allocation wrong once and the medal colour changes.
The 38th olympiad ran from 9 to 15 August 2026 in Tashkent, hosted by Uzbekistan. The results were carried in Vietnam by Nhan Dan, Vietnam News, VietnamPlus and the Vietnam News Agency, each naming the medallists and their schools, and are held permanently in the olympiad's public statistics archive, which lists every contestant and score since 1989.
A silver at the IOI is a real and verifiable marker: it places a student among the strongest few hundred competitive algorithmists of his age anywhere. It is not a prediction. The competition rewards speed of insight inside a five-hour window, and the qualities that produce research or engineering careers — persistence with an unsolved problem, tolerance for being wrong for months — are not on the paper.
