Nemmani had lost his county bee to Naysa Modi, another speller from the Dallas area. Under the old rules that would have ended his season. He was a student at Scoggins Middle School in McKinney, Texas, and 14 at the time of the win. The coverage noted that he was the fourteenth consecutive Indian-American winner of the competition, a streak that by then had run since 2008 and had become a story in its own right.
What the bee demands
The national bee is not a memory contest in the way spectators assume. Champions work from roots, languages of origin and patterns of borrowing, because no one can hold the full dictionary. A speller hears a word, asks for its language, its part of speech and its alternate pronunciations, and reconstructs its spelling from what those answers rule out.
