Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion, 1.

The Dallas duel

Nemmani had lost his county bee to Naysa Modi, another speller from the Dallas area. Under the old rules that would have ended his season. In 2018 Scripps introduced RSVBee, a wild-card programme that let qualified spellers buy their way into the national field without a sponsor's regional title, and Nemmani entered through it.

The two met again on the national stage. The Associated Press headlined its report a Dallas duel, and it ended with the county champion out and the wild card standing. Nemmani took the title on koinonia, a Greek-derived word for fellowship or communion.

A record field

NPR reported that Nemmani had out-spelled a record 515 contestants. The RSVBee programme was the reason the field was that large: by opening a paid route in, Scripps roughly doubled the number of spellers on the floor and changed the arithmetic of the competition in a single year.

The change was contested at the time, because it meant that a child whose family could pay the entry and travel had a path that a regional champion had earned. The 2018 result complicated both sides of that argument: the wild card who won was the one who had already proved himself good enough to push the county champion to a final.

What he said

Nemmani's verdict on his own win was two words long: "I got lucky." It is the sort of line that reads as modesty and is also, in a bee, close to accurate - a champion is the speller who is handed words they happen to know, in an order that happens to favour them.

He was a student at Scoggins Middle School in McKinney, Texas, and 14 at the time of the win. The coverage noted that he was the fourteenth consecutive Indian-American winner of the competition, a streak that by then had run since 2008 and had become a story in its own right.

What the bee demands

The national bee is not a memory contest in the way spectators assume. Champions work from roots, languages of origin and patterns of borrowing, because no one can hold the full dictionary. A speller hears a word, asks for its language, its part of speech and its alternate pronunciations, and reconstructs its spelling from what those answers rule out.

That is why the hours are the way they are. The top spellers in any year have put in years of daily study, usually with a parent or coach, before they ever reach Washington.
