🇺🇸 Jason Zuffranieri

The streak

Nineteen straight wins is a number with no natural reference point, so the show supplies one. Jeopardy!'s own account ranks Zuffranieri joint fourth on the all-time list of consecutive victories, alongside David Madden, with only Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer and Julia Collins ahead of him.

The winnings, $532,496, are what nineteen games produce at the level of play required to survive them. Jeopardy! is a game of recall speed and wagering discipline in roughly equal measure, and a run of that length is not survivable on knowledge alone: it requires nineteen consecutive correct decisions about how much to risk on the last clue of the game, against opponents who are also good.

A maths teacher from Albuquerque

His occupation, as the show gives it, is mathematics teacher, and his home city is Albuquerque. The record here associates him with Albuquerque Academy.

Teachers are heavily over-represented among long-running Jeopardy! champions, and mathematics teachers in particular. The plausible reason is not that teachers know more, but that the job rewards the same two habits the game does: retrieving a specific fact under time pressure in front of an audience, and being comfortable with a number line when deciding what to wager.

Why 2019 buried the story

Zuffranieri's run came in 2019, and 2019 belonged to James Holzhauer. The professional sports bettor won 32 games between April and June that year with a strategy of enormous Daily Double wagers, rewrote the single-game record repeatedly, and made Jeopardy! a national news story for two months.

A nineteen-game streak in almost any other year would have been the season's headline. Arriving months after Holzhauer's, it was covered as a footnote to a bigger story. Jeopardy!'s own streaker update, published on 26 September 2019, is one of the few pieces that treats it as the significant achievement it was.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: the 19 consecutive wins; the total of $532,496; his occupation as a mathematics teacher; his home city, Albuquerque; and the show's ranking of the streak as joint fourth all-time with David Madden.

Not documented on the pages used here: his date of birth, which is why the birth year given is derived from a reported age of 43 in 2019 and should be treated as approximate; the date his streak ended and the name of the contestant who beat him; any quotation from him; and what he has done since. The Tournament of Champions, for which a streak of that length qualifies a player, is not covered by the pages used for this page either.

What a streak actually requires

The arithmetic of Jeopardy! streaks is unforgiving. A champion who wins each game with probability two in three will, on average, last three games. Nineteen requires either a very large edge over the field or a great deal of luck, and usually both. The all-time list is short for that reason: fewer than a dozen people have gone past fifteen.

What separates the top of that list from the rest is rarely raw knowledge, which is broadly comparable among contestants who pass the show's entrance test. It is buzzer timing, which is a physical skill practised rather than known, and wagering, which is arithmetic performed live. A mathematics teacher taking nineteen games in a row is, on that reading, less of a coincidence than it looks.
