What happened

Jeopardy! tapes several episodes a day, weeks or months ahead of broadcast. Stowell passed the show's contestant test and was called while she was being treated for stage 4 colon cancer. She taped, and she won: six consecutive games, $103,803, and a place in the following year's Tournament of Champions.

She died on 5 December 2016, at 41, before her episodes reached the air. They were broadcast shortly after her death, which meant the audience watched her win in the present tense knowing she had already gone. Few television moments have that structure, and none of them are planned.

What she said

Two of her own remarks survive in the show's coverage, and they do the work that no summary can. On what the appearance meant: “This is 20-plus years in the making. It's important to set goals for yourself, no matter how much time you have left.”

And on what she wanted from the winnings: “I want to do something that will leave the world a better place.” She gave the majority of the $103,803 to cancer research. Alex Trebek, who hosted the episodes, said that appearing on the show had been the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.

What followed

Jeopardy! donated $10,000 to the Cancer Research Institute in her name. At the Tournament of Champions she had qualified for but could not play, the contestants and Trebek wore dark blue ribbons in her honour.

In July 2025 the show published a tribute on what would have been her 50th birthday, framing her as a champion with a legacy rather than as a contestant with a sad story. That distinction is the show's, and it is the right one: she qualified for the Tournament of Champions on the results, not on the circumstances.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: stage 4 colon cancer; six consecutive Jeopardy! wins in 2016; $103,803 in winnings, the majority given to cancer research; qualification for the 2017 Tournament of Champions; her death on 5 December 2016 at 41; the episodes airing shortly after; the $10,000 donation by the show to the Cancer Research Institute in her name; the blue ribbons worn at the tournament; and her two quotations.

Not documented on the pages used here: her occupation and home city, her exact date of birth, when the episodes were taped, and her family. Her birth year is inferred from the show's July 2025 tribute marking what would have been her 50th birthday. One figure differs between sources: the total is given here as $103,803, following the show, while some accounts give $105,803.

Why the story is told the way it is

Quiz shows are built on a fiction of the eternal present. The contestant standing at the lectern is always about to find out what happens next, and so is the viewer. Stowell's episodes broke that fiction in the only way it can be broken, and the show had to decide how to handle it. It chose to say so on air rather than to let the audience find out afterwards.

What survives is not primarily a story about illness. It is a record of six games won against the ordinary field, by a person who had set the goal more than twenty years earlier and reached it with weeks to spare, and who then directed the money at the disease that was killing her. Her own line, about setting goals no matter how much time is left, is the most quoted sentence she produced, and it was not offered as consolation.
