The two marks in Bath
The 2024 papers were unusually punishing. Of 609 contestants, exactly one, Haojia Shi of China, reached the maximum. Chasovskikh came next, with a scoresheet of 7, 7, 6, 6, 7, 7: two problems marked one point short of full, everything else complete, and second place in the world.
A six rather than a seven is not a wrong answer. Olympiad coordinators read each proof as written and deduct for a step that is not fully justified or a case that is not covered. Chasovskikh's 2024 paper was two small gaps away from perfection, which is as close as anyone came to Shi that year.
The perfect paper in 2025
The 2025 olympiad was held on the Sunshine Coast in Australia with 630 contestants. Five of them finished on 42: Chasovskikh, Warren Bei of Canada, Leyan Deng and Hengye Zhang of China, and Satoshi Kano of Japan. All five are listed at rank 1, because the maximum admits no tie-break.
Two consecutive years at or within two marks of the ceiling is a rarer profile than a single perfect paper. It removes the usual objection to a maximum, that a contestant caught an easy year, because the same contestant was second in the world in the hardest year in this record.
