OLIMPIADA DE MATEMÁTICAS

🇷🇺 Ivan Chasovskikh

The two marks in Bath

The 2024 papers were unusually punishing. Of 609 contestants, exactly one, Haojia Shi of China, reached the maximum. Chasovskikh came next, with a scoresheet of 7, 7, 6, 6, 7, 7: two problems marked one point short of full, everything else complete, and second place in the world.

A six rather than a seven is not a wrong answer. Olympiad coordinators read each proof as written and deduct for a step that is not fully justified or a case that is not covered. Chasovskikh's 2024 paper was two small gaps away from perfection, which is as close as anyone came to Shi that year.

The perfect paper in 2025

The 2025 olympiad was held on the Sunshine Coast in Australia with 630 contestants. Five of them finished on 42: Chasovskikh, Warren Bei of Canada, Leyan Deng and Hengye Zhang of China, and Satoshi Kano of Japan. All five are listed at rank 1, because the maximum admits no tie-break.

Two consecutive years at or within two marks of the ceiling is a rarer profile than a single perfect paper. It removes the usual objection to a maximum, that a contestant caught an easy year, because the same contestant was second in the world in the hardest year in this record.

The name without a country

Neither the 2024 nor the 2025 results table prints a country beside his name. Russian contestants competed at these olympiads without a national designation, taking part as individuals, and the database reflects that by leaving the field blank.

The research file for this page lists him as Russian and explicitly asks for the nationality to be confirmed. This page follows the file and states the limit at the same time: the primary source documents the scores and the ranks, not the flag.

What the numbers are worth

The olympiad sets six problems across two mornings, four and a half hours per paper, seven points per problem. Medals are capped at half the field and split roughly one gold to two silvers to three bronzes, so gold reaches about one contestant in twelve.

Rank 2 in a year with one perfect paper, and rank 1 in the next, places Chasovskikh in a group of perhaps a dozen contestants worldwide across those two olympiads. The count of maximums swings from one in 2024 to five in 2025 and seven in 2026, which is why a strong result in a hard year deserves reading alongside the perfect one.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented by the competition's own database: both years, both host cities, the field sizes, the per-problem scores, the totals, the ranks and the two gold medals.

Not documented: his age or date of birth, which is why this page gives no birth year; his school or city; his nationality as printed by the olympiad; and anything about his life outside the competition. No press report naming him was collected for this file.
