🇬🇧 Iskander Yusof

What the record shows

The single most precise statement about Iskander Yusof in the sources gathered here comes from a Times Higher Education news item of 7 July 2000: "Her brother, Iskander, 14, gained an A in A-level maths aged 10 and is now in the second year of a maths degree at Warwick University." The "her" is his sister Sufiah, the best-known member of the family and the subject of that article.

A regional newspaper report archived online carries the outcome in its headline: "Boy maths genius graduates, aged 15", with the sub-heading recording that Iskander and his sister, 19, shared a degree triumph at Warwick University. Passing an A-level five or six years early is unusual; completing a mathematics degree at 15 places him among the youngest British graduates of his generation.

A family of prodigies

The same 2000 article lists the household around him. Aisha, 17, was studying mathematics at Warwick. Zuleika, 6, was already familiar with the A-level mathematics syllabus. Sufiah, the best known of them, had her own national coverage. The research record describes a Northampton family of five children educated at home, with mathematics at the centre of the curriculum.

That concentration is the point of the story. Britain produces a handful of very early undergraduates in any decade, and they are usually solitary cases. A single household sending several children to the same university years ahead of schedule is a different phenomenon, and it attracted press attention that was not always kind.

The coverage around the family

The Times Higher Education Supplement had been following the family since the 1990s; the research record lists a further item from January 1997, published while the children were still moving through their qualifications.

Almost all of that coverage is framed around Sufiah, who went to university at 13 and later became the subject of a great deal of tabloid attention. Iskander appears inside those articles as a supporting fact: a brother who had done something comparable, recorded in a clause.

What is documented, and what is not

Firmly established: the A grade in A-level mathematics at 10, the Warwick mathematics degree completed at 15, the shared graduation with a 19-year-old sister, and his age of 14 in July 2000, which points to a birth year of about 1985 or 1986.

Not established here: his degree class, the exact year of graduation, and anything at all about his life since. No source gathered for this page documents his career, his research or where he lives. There is no standalone Wikipedia article about him; the encyclopaedia's coverage of the family attaches to his sister.

Why early degrees are complicated

Universities can admit a 12-year-old on the strength of examination results; they cannot make a 12-year-old the peer of the people around them. The British cases of the 1980s and 1990s, the Yusof children among them, generated a long public argument about whether accelerated schooling serves the child or the parent, and later coverage of the family was often conducted in those terms.

This page takes no position on that argument, because the sources gathered here do not settle it. What they settle is narrower: a boy who passed an A-level at 10 and held a mathematics degree at 15, and a family in which that was not even unique.
