🇺🇸 Daniel Umemezie

Named National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States at 18

Tenth holder of the title • first from Iowa • selected from 120+ programmes nationwide

On 25 April 2026, Urban Word named Daniel Somtochukwu Umemezie the 2026–2027 National Youth Poet Laureate of the United States. He was 18, a senior at Cedar Falls High School, and had been chosen from young poets drawn out of more than 120 youth poetry programmes across the country. He is the tenth person to hold the title and the first ever from Iowa. The poem that won it, "Two Nigerias", was published by the North American Review that summer.

Daniel Somtochukwu Umemezie was born and raised in Nigeria and moved to the United States as a teenager, settling in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The migration became the central material of his poetry, which works on memory, belonging, family, language and the experience of holding two countries at once.

Before the national appointment he had built an unusually complete regional record: Cedar Valley Youth Poet Laureate, then Midwest Regional Youth Poet Laureate, and the 2025–2026 Iowa Student Poet Ambassador, selected by the Iowa Poetry Association. He also founded the Iowa Youth Poetry Council.

The North American Review published his poem "Forma Negata" in 2025, an early sign that his work was being read outside the youth-poetry circuit.

On 25 April 2026 Urban Word named him the 2026–2027 National Youth Poet Laureate — the tenth holder of the title, and the first from Iowa in the programme's history. The winning poem, "Two Nigerias", appeared in the North American Review's Summer 2026 issue.

He was interviewed on PBS NewsHour about using poetry to bridge his two countries, and United States Senator Chuck Grassley entered remarks applauding him as Iowa's first national youth laureate. He has begun undergraduate study at Iowa State University, where he plans to major in aerospace engineering.

Daniel Umemezie matters because the National Youth Poet Laureateship is a national appointment rather than a prize: the holder spends a year representing American youth poetry in public. He earned it by working up an entire ladder — city, state, region, nation — while publishing in a serious literary journal rather than only on stage. That he is the first Iowan in ten years of the programme says something about where the country looks for its young writers.
