🇨🇦 Brendon Matusch

The contest

The EU Contest for Young Scientists brings national competition winners together once a year. The 2018 edition was staged at Dublin Castle and judged on 18 September, with 139 students from 38 countries presenting 90 projects.

Three first prizes of €7,000 each were awarded rather than a single grand prize. Matusch took one. The others went to Nicolas Fedrigo, also of Canada, for a redesigned spinal-fusion surgery tool, and to the German brother and sister Adrian and Anna Amelie Fleck for FleckProtec, body protection made from starch.

The project

An autonomous vehicle controlled by neural networks is, at 15, a serious undertaking: it means a physical platform that moves, a sensing arrangement that perceives, and a trained model that connects the two well enough to be demonstrated in front of judges.

The contest's description frames the work as an investigation rather than a product — a study of the software strategies that make autonomous control reliable, safe and efficient. That is the honest framing for the field itself, where the difficulty has never been getting a vehicle to drive on a good day but establishing what it will do on a bad one. No technical specification, test footage or code repository is named in this record.

Neural-network control is also the approach that makes the reliability question hardest to answer. A model learned from examples cannot be read line by line the way conventional code can, so demonstrating that it behaves safely means testing behaviour rather than inspecting logic. A project that sets out to compare software strategies on exactly those terms is asking the question the industry has spent a decade on.

Two Canadians at a European contest

Two of the three first prizes in 2018 went to Canadian entrants, which says something about how EUCYS works: alongside the European national winners, the contest hosts entrants from invited countries beyond the European Union, and they compete on equal terms.

Second and third prizes that year went to projects from France, Estonia, Portugal, Georgia, South Korea and China. Ireland's Simon Meehan won the Expo Sciences Luxembourg prize at the same event.

The contest is also unusually broad in subject. In the same year that Matusch presented vehicle control software, the other first prizes went to a surgical instrument and a protective material made from starch — three fields with nothing in common except the standard of work required to reach the final round.

What the organisers said

The European Commissioner Carlos Moedas summarised the 2018 field in a line: "It's encouraging to see so much talent in these young researchers and innovators. They are Europe's future."

It is a stock sentiment, but the arithmetic behind it is not. Each of those 139 students had already won a national competition to be in the room, which makes a first prize at EUCYS the end of a two-stage selection rather than a single contest.
