🇨🇦 Hua Wei Chan

He can multiply two three-digit numbers in his head, and came second in the world at it

Hua Wei Chan at the Mental Calculation World Cup, Giessen, 2012

CBC News went to Edmonton in March 2013 to meet a man they called the human calculator. Hua Wei Chan does addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in his head - 423 times 652, for instance - and six months earlier he had finished second at the Mental Calculation World Cup in Germany, behind a Japanese abacus teacher and ahead of everyone else in the field.

Giessen, 2012

The Mental Calculation World Cup ran in Giessen, Germany, from 29 September to 1 October 2012. The official results table gives the winner as Naofumi Ogasawara of Japan with 828.15 points. Second place went to Hua Wei Chan, with 523.83.

The gap at the top was large, but second place in a small invitational field of the world's trained mental calculators is the strongest documented result of Chan's career. CBC News reported it the following March, noting simply that he had placed second at the World Cup held in Germany.

What competitors actually have to do

The World Cup is not a general arithmetic test. Competitors add ten ten-digit numbers, multiply two eight-digit numbers by each other, extract square roots from six-digit numbers and cube roots as well, and name the weekday for calendar dates drawn from anywhere between 1600 and 2100. A set of six surprise tasks is scored separately for versatility.

All of it is done without paper for working and without any device. The scoring combines speed and accuracy, and the standard rounds are supplemented by best-of-two formats. The 423 times 652 that CBC used to illustrate Chan's ability is, by the standards of that hall, a warm-up.

Edmonton or Malaysia

There is a discrepancy in the record that should be stated rather than smoothed. The official World Cup results table lists Hua Wei Chan under Malaysia. CBC News, reporting six months later, places him in Edmonton, Alberta.

Both can be true of the same person, and neither source explains the other. Competitors at international events are entered under a country of affiliation that need not be their country of residence. This page follows CBC on where he lives and the official table on how he was entered, and does not resolve the two into a single claim.

How small the discipline is

Competitive mental calculation is a narrow world. The World Cup is a single biennial meeting with a field measured in dozens rather than thousands, drawing people who have trained on the same handful of tasks, often for years. There is no professional circuit and very little money in it.

That scale cuts both ways when assessing a result. A second place is not second out of millions. It is second among the people who take the discipline seriously enough to travel to Germany and sit the tasks, which is the only meaningful comparison the sport offers.

What is documented and what is not

Documented: his second place at the Mental Calculation World Cup of 2012 with 523.83 points, the dates and venue of that competition, the disciplines contested, the winner Naofumi Ogasawara, his nickname as a human calculator, his residence in Edmonton per CBC, and his listing under Malaysia in the official results.

Not documented in these sources: his age or date of birth, his occupation, how he trains, how fast he works, and anything about him after March 2013. CBC's report carries no direct quotation from him and no biographical detail beyond Edmonton. No IQ figure appears anywhere in this file.
