🇮🇪 Adnan Osmani

Un écolier de Mullingar a écrit un navigateur lisant le web à haute voix et a remporté le plus grand prix scientifique d'Irlande

Adnan Osmani, BT Young Scientist of the Year 2003, pour le navigateur XWebs

What he built

The project was a working browser, entered under the name XWebs. RTE's report of the award describes two features: a claimed fourfold acceleration of internet use, and an animated on-screen character that spoke the contents of a page using human speech synthesis. In 2003 both were unusual in a consumer browser and neither was standard in the ones most people used.

The judges' verdict, as RTE reported it, was about the maker rather than the software: his achievement and the depth of his knowledge, they said, were far in advance of his years. That is the sentence the competition exists to produce, and it is rarely earned by a single-handed engineering project of this size.

The competition he won

The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition is Ireland's national science fair, running since 1965, and its overall winner is named Young Scientist of the Year. Its roll of honour is unusually consequential for a school competition. Sarah Flannery took the 1999 title for work in cryptography and went on to Cambridge; Patrick Collison won in 2005 for a new dialect of Lisp and co-founded Stripe five years later; Luke Drury, the 1969 winner, became an astrophysicist at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics.

Osmani's win sits two years before Collison's, in the same run of early-2000s winners whose projects were software rather than laboratory science. The exhibition's own listings place him at St Finian's College in Mullingar, County Westmeath.

What happened next

The Irish Examiner's 2014 survey of past winners is the only follow-up in this file. It records that Osmani took a BSc in applied computer engineering and an MSc in computer science from the University of Sheffield. It gives no country of residence and no employer.

Eleven years after the award, that is the extent of the published record: two degrees and a subject. The same feature had no difficulty saying where other winners had ended up, which suggests the gap is a genuine absence of information rather than an oversight.

Two things this page will not claim

The first is the spelling of his name. RTE's 2003 report renders it Adann Osmani; the exhibition's own listing and the later Irish Examiner feature use Adnan Osmani. This page uses the latter and notes the discrepancy rather than quietly choosing one.

The second is a common piece of internet guesswork. The research file for this page raises, and immediately flags as unverified, the suggestion that the 2003 winner is the software engineer Addy Osmani, known for his work on web performance at Google. No source consulted for this page connects the two names. Until one does, the claim does not belong in a biography, and it is not made here.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: the 2003 Young Scientist of the Year award, his age of 16 at the time, his school and town, the browser and its two reported features, the judges' comment, and the two degrees recorded in 2014.

Not documented in these sources: his date of birth, which is why no birth year appears here; whether XWebs was ever released publicly; his career after his master's degree; and any connection to any other person of a similar name. The prize money or scholarship attached to the 2003 award is also absent from the material used here.

What is documented — and what is not

✓ Documented

  • Won BT Young Scientist of the Year in January 2003 for a self-written web browser
  • Aged 16, a student at St Finian's College, Mullingar (RTE)
  • RTE reported the browser read pages aloud and claimed a fourfold speed increase
  • Irish Examiner (2014) records a BSc in applied computer engineering and an MSc from Sheffield

? Unverified, disputed or wrong

  • No date of birth in these sources
  • No confirmation that he is the Google engineer Addy Osmani; this is unverified and not claimed here

How old was he when he won?

RTE reported that he was 16 at the time of the January 2003 award.

Which school did he attend?

St Finian's College in Mullingar, County Westmeath.

Is Adnan Osmani the same person as Addy Osmani of Google?

No source used here connects the two names. The research file raises the possibility and flags it as unverified, so this page does not make the claim.

What did he study afterwards?

A BSc in applied computer engineering and an MSc in computer science from the University of Sheffield, according to the Irish Examiner in 2014.

Is Adnan Osmani on Wikipedia?

No standalone article is recorded; the name appears in coverage of the Young Scientist exhibition.

Why do sources spell his name differently?

RTE's 2003 report spells it Adann Osmani. The exhibition listing and later coverage use Adnan Osmani.

Where is Adnan Osmani now?

Nothing after his master's degree is documented in these sources.
