Wolfsburg, 2018

The 2018 World Cup ran in Wolfsburg from 28 to 30 September, with 33 competitors from countries including Japan, South Korea, Spain, the United States, Lebanon, Bulgaria, Cuba, India and Algeria. The combination standing was won by Tomohiro Iseda of Japan on 757.18 points, with his compatriot Hiroto Ihara second on 663.54. Third, on 593.80, was Wenzel Grüß.

His category sheet shows a calculator strong across the board rather than a specialist: seventh in adding ten ten-digit numbers, eighth in square roots of six-digit numbers, thirteenth in multiplying eight-digit numbers and twenty-eighth in calendar calculation. It is the profile of someone who concedes nothing and dominates nothing — which is exactly the profile that wins the event he won.

Most Versatile Calculator

The Most Versatile Calculator title is settled on surprise tasks that the organisers keep secret until the competition. Nothing about them can be drilled in advance, which makes the category the closest the sport comes to measuring adaptability rather than rehearsal. Grüß won it in 2018 with 461.17 points.

That is the result worth remembering. Anyone prepared to spend years on ten-digit addition can climb the fixed disciplines. Winning on problems nobody has trained for requires the underlying machinery to be general.

Nine years at it

He was not new. The record here has him debuting at the Junior Mental Calculation World Cup in 2011, aged nine, and taking second place. Seven years later he was on the senior podium. He comes from Bad Iburg in Lower Saxony and was seventeen in January 2020, when the specialist site World Mental Calculation published an interview with him.

The football routine — Köpfball, in German — belongs to the same period: multiplying while heading a ball, a demonstration that the calculation runs below the level of conscious attention. In 2018 it took him onto the Russian television programme Incredible People, which is how most of the world outside the competition circuit encountered him.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: third place overall at the 2018 World Cup with 593.80 points; the Most Versatile Calculator title with 461.17; his four individual placings that year; a second place at the 2011 Junior World Cup at nine; his home town; his age of seventeen in January 2020; the Russian television appearance; and the football-heading demonstration.

Not documented in the sources used here: his exact date of birth; his schooling or university; his results at World Cups after 2018, including whether he has continued to compete; and the details of the Köpfball routine — how large the numbers are, and under what verification it has been performed.

How the competition is built

The Mental Calculation World Cup is a fixed-format event. Competitors add ten ten-digit numbers in seven minutes, multiply pairs of eight-digit numbers in ten minutes, extract square roots from six-digit numbers in ten minutes, and name weekdays for calendar dates between 1600 and 2100 against a one-minute clock. A combination score produces the overall ranking; the surprise-task title runs alongside it.

Thirty-three competitors is a small field by the standards of any mainstream sport, and that is the point: the entry requirement is not talent alone but several years of daily practice on tasks with no application outside the room. What the results tables preserve is a precise, unsentimental record of who could do what, on which morning, to the decimal point. Few disciplines involving teenagers are documented so exactly.
