Eighty-eight seconds

The task is exactly what it sounds like: ten numbers of ten digits each, added mentally, with an eleven-digit answer at the end and no partial credit. Bhore did it in 88.40 seconds, a world record at the moment he finished.

The record-attempt session that day was unusually productive. Aaryan Shukla broke Bhore's mark eight minutes later with 78.08 seconds, and also set new records in the calendar and square-root tasks; Kaloyan Geshev of Bulgaria took the division record down to 32.38 seconds.

Paderborn, 2024

The World Cup was held at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn, Germany, with 35 mental calculators from 16 countries and an age range running from 10 to 84. Nine events were contested: calendar dates, addition, multiplication and square roots, plus five surprise tasks that year, among them calculating the square root of 1985 divided by pi.

Bhore placed third in addition with 24 correct answers for 20 points. The overall title went to Aaryan Shukla of India, then 14, with 819.84 points, ahead of Geshev on 532.86 and Hiko Chiba of Japan on 455.75.

Bronze in Bielefeld

The Junior Mental Calculation World Championship followed a week later, from 21 to 23 September 2024 in Bielefeld, with 84 competitors from 14 nations. Bhore took bronze in the under-15 division with 2,350 points out of a possible 2,762, behind Kaloyan Geshev on 2,664 and Andrej Živanović of Serbia on 2,550.

The organisers noted that he had improved his score by roughly 400 points on the previous year. In a scored discipline that is the number that matters: medals depend on who else turns up, but a 400-point gain is a measurement of the competitor himself.

How the sport is scored

Mental calculation competitions are built from fixed tasks with published maximums, which is why results can be compared across years and continents. A junior championship score of 2,350 against a ceiling of 2,762 states precisely how much of the paper a competitor completed.

It also means nothing is anecdotal. Every record listed here was set in front of officials at a scheduled attempt session, timed and witnessed, and published afterwards by the organisers rather than announced by the competitor. That is why a record can be lost eight minutes after it is set: both attempts happened in the same room, under the same officials, on the same afternoon.
