SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Susan Yoachum

Interlocutory

The Chicago Tribune of 6 June 1969 reported the win under a headline that quoted her own explanation: "Dallas Girl, 14, Wins National Spelling Contest with 'Luck'". United Press International's account, carried in the Troy Times Record the day before, was headed "Texas Girl Captures Spelling Bee".

She attended Hill Junior High School in Dallas. The runner-up was Margaret Matthees. Interlocutory is a legal term — a ruling made during the course of a case rather than at its end — and it is exactly the kind of Latinate professional vocabulary that decides finals, because it can be constructed by anyone who knows the parts.

From the microphone to the newsroom

The bee's most natural professional destination is journalism, and Yoachum took it further than most. She became political editor of the San Francisco Chronicle — a senior post at one of the largest papers in the American West, responsible for the coverage of California politics in a period when the state's contests set national agendas.

The skills transfer almost directly. A speller is trained to interrogate an unfamiliar word before committing: origin, definition, alternate pronunciations, part of speech. A political reporter is trained to interrogate an unfamiliar claim in the same sequence before putting it into print.

1998

She died of breast cancer in June 1998, at forty-three. The San Francisco Chronicle published its notice on 23 June. An obituary in one's own newspaper is a particular kind of document — written by colleagues, for a readership that had followed the byline for years.

It is also, for this collection, a reminder of what a complete record looks like. Most of the champions here vanish from the archive after their week of coverage. Yoachum's life is documented at both ends: the 1969 wire copy of a fourteen-year-old winning a spelling bee, and the 1998 obituary of the journalist she became.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1969 National Spelling Bee on interlocutory, aged fourteen, as a Dallas student at Hill Junior High School; Margaret Matthees as runner-up; her later role as political editor of the San Francisco Chronicle; and her death from breast cancer in June 1998 at forty-three.

Not documented in the sources used here: her date of birth; her college and the early stages of her newspaper career; the papers she worked for before the Chronicle; the length of the 1969 final; and her family. This page reports a public career and a published obituary, and goes no further into a private life.

What the bee sent into American journalism

The spelling bee and the American newspaper industry grew up together. Papers sponsored the regional competitions, promoted them to readers, and covered the results; the national final was, for decades, a newspaper story about a newspaper-sponsored event. It is not surprising that some of the children who won went into the business that had built the stage.

What is striking is how far several of them rose. Within this collection alone, one champion became a Wall Street Journal reporter and another the political editor of a major metropolitan daily. The bee selected for precision, preparation and public composure under questioning — the working requirements of the job — and then handed the winners a week of experience being interviewed, which few thirteen-year-olds ever get.
