🇺🇸 Snehaa Ganesh Kumar

Two finals in two years

The Associated Press report carried by The Boston Globe on 28 May 2015 listed the ten spellers who had made that year's final. Snehaa was among them, and she tied for fourth. Returning to the final is the hard part: qualification restarts every year from the classroom up.

In 2016 she went one place better. MedillDC reported on 27 May that the California teenager had taken third, and NPR's account of the same bee recorded the ending the organisers had come to dread — another impasse, with the title shared by two spellers.

Oflag and usucapion

An Oflag was a German prisoner-of-war camp for officers, from Offizierslager. Usucapion is the acquisition of ownership through long, uncontested possession — a doctrine of Roman law that survives in civil codes. Neither is guessable; both are recoverable if you know the source language and the pattern.

Snehaa missed the first in 2015 and the second in 2016. That is the ordinary texture of a bee career at this level: a speller does not fail on common words, but on a single item drawn from a list that runs to tens of thousands of entries. The preparation is closer to comparative linguistics than to rote learning, and the margin for error is one letter.

Third at 13

Thirteen is prime spelling age. The field at the top of the modern bee is dominated by seventh and eighth graders with several years of systematic study behind them, and the distance between third and first can be a handful of words on a single night.

Finishing third in 2016 put her among the last spellers standing in a final that the organisers could not resolve cleanly. In a year that produced co-champions, the third-placed speller is closer to the title than the table suggests.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: the 2015 fourth-place tie, the 2016 third place, her age of 13, her home town of Folsom, California, and the two words that eliminated her. The research record gives her birth year as 2003.

Not documented in these sources: her school, her sponsoring newspaper, how many times she qualified, her family, and anything about her life after 2016. Her name does not appear in the record with a Wikipedia article of its own.

How rare a national final is

Millions of American schoolchildren enter classroom bees each year. A few hundred reach the national competition, and a single-digit number make the final rounds broadcast in prime time. Making that stage twice, and improving, is a genuinely small club.

The sources here stop at the 2016 result, which is the honest end of the story. What Snehaa Ganesh Kumar did between the ages of about eleven and thirteen is on the record; what she did afterwards is not, and this page does not pretend otherwise. Two finals, one fourth-place tie and one third place are the whole of the documented achievement, and they are enough.
