🇮🇳 Shreya Shantanu Mundhada

First Indian ever to win gold at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad

Gold at EGMO 2026, Bordeaux • India's best-ever 6th of 67 • IMO team, Shanghai

India has sent teams to the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad since it opened to guest nations, and had never won gold. At the fifteenth edition in Bordeaux, from 9 to 15 April 2026, 16-year-old Shreya Shantanu Mundhada did — the first Indian gold medal in the competition's history, and the result that lifted India to sixth place out of 67 participating countries, its best finish ever.

Shreya Shantanu Mundhada is an Indian school student who became, at 16, the first Indian ever to win a gold medal at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad.

Her olympiad path began in December 2022, aged 13, when she enrolled in a week-long online All Girls' Mathematics Nurturing Camp — one of the entry points in India's mathematics-olympiad training pipeline, designed specifically to widen the pool of girls reaching national selection.

She was selected for India's four-member team for EGMO's fifteenth edition, staged in Bordeaux, France, from 9 to 15 April 2026. The competition drew a record 260 contestants from 67 teams, with Iceland, Nigeria and Rwanda making their debuts.

Her gold was the first of its kind for India and lifted the team to sixth overall, its best result in the event's history. Her team-mates Sanjana Philo Chacko and Shivani Barath Kumar took silver and bronze respectively.

Reports differ on her schooling: some outlets identify her as a Mumbai student, while others place her in Class XII at Mahaveer Junior College in Pune. Following EGMO she was named to India's national team for the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad, held in Shanghai in July 2026.

Shreya Shantanu Mundhada matters because firsts in olympiad mathematics are structural, not lucky. India has one of the largest school mathematics populations on earth and had never converted it into an EGMO gold; the pipeline that produced her — a nurturing camp aimed specifically at girls, entered at 13 — is the reason the drought ended. Her medal is also the measurable part of a team result that was India's best in the competition's history.
