Brazil, November 2024
The Chess Drum reported on 9 November 2024 that Saad Elmi had clinched the International Master title at the World Youth Under-18 Championship in Brazil. The IM title is the second-highest in chess, below grandmaster, and is awarded by the International Chess Federation only after a player has both reached the required rating and scored a set of qualifying norms in international tournaments.
Elmi was 18 when he completed it. The site later listed the achievement among its highlights of 2024, in a year-end round-up published on 31 December, which places the title alongside the year's other notable results for players of African descent.
From Somalia to Oslo
Elmi's parents settled in Oslo, and he grew up in the Norwegian chess system, a system best known outside the country for producing Magnus Carlsen. His own first significant title came in 2022, when he won the Nordic Youth Championship.
By 2024 he was a student at the Norwegian School of Elite Sports, the Oslo institution that lets athletes combine schooling with full-time training, and was sponsored by the Norwegian investment company FERD. That combination, a specialist school place and a corporate sponsor, is what a serious junior career looks like in a small chess country.
What the rating means
At the time of the title he was rated 2382. For context, the IM title generally requires a rating that clears 2400 at some point, with norms earned against titled opposition; a player sitting just below that mark has done the hard part and is grinding out the last rating points.
The Chess Drum's interest in the story was not only sporting. The site covers the African diaspora in chess, a constituency where titled players remain scarce, and Elmi is a Somali-Norwegian in a discipline with very few Somali title holders. The Swedish grandmaster Pontus Carlsson, himself a prominent Black player in Nordic chess, is named in the record as a mentor.
Where Saad Elmi is now
The last dated facts in these sources are from late 2024: the title, the 2382 rating, and the place at the Norwegian School of Elite Sports. Nothing after that is recorded here, including whether he has since pushed towards grandmaster norms.
Norwegian-language coverage of him almost certainly exists and would carry more detail; none of it is in this file. Readers who want a current rating should check his federation record rather than rely on this page.
