🇳🇬 Nyuima Tersee

Seventeen, and the last game decided on Armageddon

Nyuima Ferdinand Tersee became the youngest Nigerian national chess champion in December 2024.

In December 2024 a 17-year-old from Kubwa won the Nigerian national chess championship, and had to survive an Armageddon tiebreak to do it. Nyuima Ferdinand Tersee beat an international master during the event and a FIDE master in the decider, becoming the youngest national champion his country has produced and qualifying to represent Nigeria in continental competition.

The championship, and the tiebreak

The Chess Drum reported the result on 20 December 2024 with a headline that needed no elaboration: a 17-year-old was the new Nigerian champion. The title came down to an Armageddon game against FIDE master Abdulrahman Akintoye.

Armageddon is chess at its most compressed. One player takes White with more time on the clock but must win; the other takes Black with less time and needs only a draw. It exists because tournaments must produce a winner by the end of the day, and it rewards nerve as much as preparation. Tersee came through it.

From Kubwa to the national title

The Nigeria Chess Federation told the story under the title "From Kubwa to Champion", tracing his rise from the Abuja suburb. He is from Benue State in Nigeria's Middle Belt.

En route to the title he beat international master Odion Aikhoje, one of the established names in Nigerian chess. Beating a titled player is the ordinary business of a strong tournament; doing it as a teenager without a title of one's own, in the event that decides the national championship, is what turned the result into a story.

What the win qualified him for

The national championship is not only a trophy. It carries selection, and the win qualified Tersee to represent Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Individual Chess Championship, the continental event where African players compete for titles and for places in the world championship cycle.

For a player without an international title, that is the ladder: national championship, continental event, norms, and eventually a FIDE title. The alternative route, a circuit of open tournaments in Europe, is expensive in a way that is out of reach for most African juniors.

A note on the year of the title

Coverage does not use a single label for the event. The Chess Drum dated the victory to December 2024, while PositiveNaija reported in February 2025 that he had won the 2025 National Chess Championship. Both refer to the same run of games; national federations frequently name a championship for the year it confers rather than the month it is played.

This page follows the date rather than the label: the games were played in December 2024, and the title he holds is the Nigerian national championship.

Why Nigerian chess is watched now

Nigeria has produced strong players for decades, and Odion Aikhoje's international master title is part of that lineage. What has changed is the pipeline of juniors and the attention paid to them, driven partly by the sport's online boom and partly by federations publicising their champions directly, as the Nigeria Chess Federation did here.

Tersee's age is the headline, but the durable detail is the field he beat: a national championship contested by titled players, decided in the format designed to break deadlocks. That is a result that survives the news cycle.

A national championship is also a test of endurance. It means consecutive days of long games against the strongest players in the country, with the standings moving under the leaders each round. Winning one at seventeen, and then holding the position through a tiebreak, is a different order of result from a single upset in a weekend open.
