The event she won

The square-root discipline is the most brutally specific of the World Cup's categories. The format, as set out in the official results, is ten tasks in ten minutes, taken as the better of two rounds, with six-digit numbers as the starting point. There is no partial credit for being close.

Shah answered all ten correctly in both rounds. Her times were 166 seconds and 135 seconds, which is to say she finished the second round with more than seven of her ten minutes unused, at an average of about thirteen and a half seconds per root. That was first place in the world in the category.

The rest of the card

A World Cup placing is an aggregate, and Shah's other results show a competitor strong across the board rather than a specialist. In addition, using ten-digit numbers, she finished third, with nine correct in the first round and ten in the second in 275 seconds. In multiplication, using eight-digit numbers, she came fourth, with seven correct and then nine.

The calendar discipline, in which competitors name the day of the week for given dates, put her seventh with 36 points. The surprise tasks, the round designed to test versatility against problems the competitors have not trained for, was her weakest, at twenty-first with 102.57 points. Her overall total was 391.03.

Eighth in the world, and who was above her

The 2014 World Cup was held in Dresden, Germany, from 10 to 12 October, with 39 competitors. The overall title went to Granth Thakkar of India with 577.77 points, ahead of Marc Jornet Sanz of Spain on 559.85 and Chie Ishikawa of Japan on 552.02.

Behind them came Andreas Berger of Germany on 472.91, Robert Fountain of Great Britain on 460.50, Adi Tamir of Israel on 459.51 and George Lane of Great Britain on 414.07. Shah was eighth on 391.03, ahead of Hua Wei Chan of Malaysia and Wenzel Grüß of Germany. Both the overall champion and the square-root champion that year were Indian.

What is documented — and what is not

The firm facts are the organisers' own scoring tables: the category placings, the number of correct answers in each round, the times, the overall total and the final position. A results sheet published by the event itself is the strongest form of documentation available for a competition of this kind.

What the sheet does not carry is a person. It gives no age, no date of birth, no city, no school and no photograph, and nothing in the sources gathered here says how Shah trained, whether she competed again, or what she has done since 2014. Those gaps are set out rather than filled.

What mental square roots actually involve

Extracting a square root in the head is not a single trick but a chain of them: bracketing the answer between two known squares, refining the estimate, and correcting digit by digit while holding the intermediate values in working memory. The World Cup's use of six-digit inputs is calibrated so that the answer cannot be recalled and must be constructed.

Doing that ten times in 135 seconds, without an error, is the part of Shah's record that resists being translated into a familiar comparison. The competition itself is the only real measure, and in October 2014 it ranked her first in the world at it.
