🇩🇪 Philipp Weyer

Melbourne, July 2019

The World Cube Association's list of world champions records the 2019 result plainly: Philipp Weyer of Germany, 6.74 seconds, average, at the championship held in Melbourne from 11 to 14 July.

The word average carries the weight. Speedcubing results are a trimmed mean of five attempts, with the fastest and the slowest discarded and the middle three averaged. A single fast solve cannot win a world title; a competitor has to produce three good ones in a row, under judging, on scrambles set by the organisers.

Nearly two seconds faster than 2011

Set beside earlier championships, Weyer's number shows how quickly the sport accelerated. The 2011 title in Bangkok went to Michal Pleskowicz of Poland with an average of 8.65 seconds. Eight years later the winning mark had fallen by almost two seconds.

In an event decided in single digits, that is a transformation rather than an increment. It came from refined solving methods, from hardware built specifically for competition, and from a field that had grown into the hundreds of thousands of registered competitors. The winning time of one era becomes the entry standard of the next, which is the pattern in every sport that measures itself in fractions of a second.

A title held through a cancellation

The World Championship has run every two years since 2003, with a single exception: the 2021 edition was cancelled because of COVID-19. The next championships on the record are Seattle in 2025 and Uppsala, Sweden, scheduled for 22 to 25 July 2027.

The cancellation is the unusual footnote to Weyer's win. A title normally sits with its holder for two years; the pandemic extended his considerably, through a period when official competitions largely stopped.

The scale of the sport he won

The World Cube Association, founded on 18 October 2004 by Ron van Bruchem and Tyson Mao, sanctions every official competition through its delegates and publishes every ratified record. It employs 464 delegates and 112 committee members across its teams.

As of August 2026 the association counted more than 290,000 competitors across over 17,500 official competitions, and recognises 17 official events, from the 2x2x2 cube to blindfolded solving and one-handed solving. A world championship in the flagship 3x3x3 event is the summit of that structure.

What is documented - and what is not

The evidence used here is secondary: encyclopaedia entries that cite World Cube Association results. The association's own competitor profile could not be read for this page, and that limitation is stated rather than glossed over.

No birth year, age, home city, occupation or subsequent competitive record for Weyer appears in the sources used here. The championship line is firm and everything else is absent, which is the shape of the public record for most competitors in this sport: a name, a country, a number and a date, published by the body that verified it.
