What happened

In 2021 several outlets reported that Lawson, from The Dalles in Oregon, had been admitted to Mensa at three. The Good News Network reported his tested score as 151, and noted that the assessment hit a ceiling: on roughly a fifth of the test the examiners ran out of questions to ask him, and recommended retesting in a few years using a format without that limit. Mensa's own entry threshold is an IQ of 130.

Any number of that kind should be read for what it is. It is a score on one professional assessment of a three-year-old, reported by news outlets rather than published in a study, and the testers themselves said the instrument could not measure him properly. This page reports it as the outlets reported it.

How it started

His mother, Sara, told the Good News Network that he barely spoke during his first two years, and then moved fast. "He seemed leaps-and-bounds ahead, learning shapes without us having to teach him," she said. He worked out phonics on his own, which the family discovered during an ice storm when the power was out, a development she said "blew us away".

By three he knew the names and capitals of 195 countries, every flag, and all 50 states, and had become interested in currency. The pattern, a very quiet start followed by rapid self-directed learning, is the detail that made the story travel further than a test score would have on its own.

Painting for the March of Dimes

Lawson used the geography he had memorised to raise money. He painted the shapes of states and countries and offered them in exchange for donations to the March of Dimes, the charity that funds work on premature birth and infant health. The Good News Network reported that he raised $525 from family friends.

The Columbia Community Connection covered the fundraiser under a headline noting that he had spent his birthday painting for charity, and KOIN 6 followed the story as he turned four. His mother framed it simply: "We have talked about the importance of charity."

What is documented, and what is not

The sources establish the Mensa membership, the reported score, the family's account of his development, the fundraising and the sum raised. The research record adds that he was born five weeks early; the articles read here say only that he was born prematurely in Portland and spent several weeks in intensive care.

Nothing in this record documents his schooling, and nothing published since 2021 was found. He is a child, and this page carries no information about where he studies, what his routine is or how his family can be reached.

What a Mensa membership at three actually means

Testing a three-year-old is inherently unstable. Standardised instruments are designed around the attention span and verbal range of children who can sit still and answer at length, and results at that age move as children grow. That is precisely why the examiners recommended retesting later with an unlimited-question format.

So the headline number is the least interesting part of the story. The reportable facts are narrower and more durable: a premature baby who barely spoke for two years, then taught himself to read, memorised the political map of the world, and spent his fourth birthday painting it to raise money for other premature babies.
