CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFÍA

🇺🇸 Jolitta Schlehuber

Syllepsis

The Times-News of Hendersonville reported the result on 12 June 1958 under the headline "Kansas Girl Top Speller". The runner-up, Terry Madeira, was eliminated on propylaeum — the gateway structure of a Greek temple precinct, and as pure a test of Greek transliteration as the bee offers.

Syllepsis is a figure of speech in which one word governs two others in different senses. Both words belong to the category that decides national finals: technical, Greek, and impossible to guess from sound.

A small rural school

The Nunda News of New York ran a piece on 19 June 1958 headed "New National Spelling Champ Studies in Small Rural School". That was the angle papers reached for, and it says something real about how the competition worked.

The bee's regional structure, run through newspaper sponsorship, reached small towns as effectively as cities. A child in McPherson, Kansas, competed on the same word lists as a child in Chicago, and the preparation depended on a dictionary and a family rather than on any institution. It is one of the few American competitive pathways of the period that was genuinely indifferent to where a competitor lived.

The $64,000 Question

She went on to win $8,000 on The $64,000 Question, the prime-time quiz that was then among the most watched programmes on American television. A spelling champion appearing on it was a natural booking: the show's format — escalating questions, an isolation booth, a national audience — was built for exactly the kind of composure the bee had already tested.

Eight thousand dollars in 1958 was a serious sum for a teenager, and it is the largest documented payout to any champion in this collection. The Lawrence Journal-World revisited her win forty years later, in March 1998, in a piece on a local resident for whom the bee had spelled victory.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: a win at the 1958 National Spelling Bee on syllepsis, aged fourteen, from McPherson, Kansas; status as the state's first national champion; a fourth place at the 1957 bee; runner-up Terry Madeira eliminated on propylaeum; study at a small rural school; and $8,000 won on The $64,000 Question.

Not documented in the sources used here: her date of birth; the name of her school; the date of the television appearance and the subject on which she was questioned; her education and career; her married name, if any; and anything about her adult life beyond the 1998 local retrospective.

When spelling was prime time

The late 1950s were the high-water mark of the American quiz format, and the spelling bee sat inside that culture rather than beside it. Champions appeared on variety shows and quiz programmes; the competition supplied television with a steady stream of articulate, well-drilled children, and television supplied the competition with a national profile no newspaper promotion could match.

Jolitta Schlehuber's run through both — a national title in June, a quiz-show payout afterwards — is the clearest example in this collection of what the arrangement offered a fourteen-year-old. It also shows its limits. The money and the appearances lasted a season; the local paper came back once, forty years later; and the rest of a life lived in Kansas is not in the public record at all.
