The ruling that decided it

The Daily Illini reported the 1936 result under a headline crediting the dictionaries with crowning the Iowa champion. Numskull is one of the words English has never settled: numskull and numbskull are both recorded, and a speller who offers either is at the mercy of which authority the judges are using.

They ruled in her favour. She then won the competition on eczema - a Greek-derived medical term whose cz is the trap, since nothing in the English sound of it suggests that pair of letters. The runner-up, Bruce Ackerman, was eliminated on predilection.

The bee that made a different kind of history

The 1936 competition carried a first that has outlasted its championship. MacNolia Cox and Elizabeth Kenny were the first Black finalists in the history of the national bee, competing in a Washington that was still segregated.

Trowbridge won that year. The presence of Cox and Kenny is the reason the 1936 bee is still written about, and any account of the competition's history that leaves them out is incomplete.

What happened to Cox at that bee has been the subject of a great deal of later writing, and this page does not summarise accounts it has not read. The fact the sources here support is the one worth stating plainly: in 1936, for the first time, the national final included Black competitors.

A small Iowa town

Stuart, Iowa, is a town of a few thousand people on the line between Adair and Guthrie counties. Sending a national spelling champion from a place that size was the sort of result the sponsoring-newspaper system was built to produce: a regional bee, a paid trip to Washington, and a front page when it worked.

She lived a long life afterwards. Her obituary, published in Grand Junction, Colorado, under her married name Tyler, records her death in 2020 at 98 - eighty-four years after the championship.

The distance between those two dates is itself unusual in this file. Most champions of the 1930s vanish from the record within a week of their final, and Trowbridge's obituary, published in a Colorado newspaper eight decades later, is the rare document that closes the circle.

Why the numskull ruling matters

Spelling bees rest on a single premise: that there is a correct spelling and the dictionary holds it. Variant spellings puncture that premise, and the rules exist to manage the puncture - the judges consult, they choose an authority, and the speller lives with the decision.

In 1936 the decision went one way and produced a champion. It is a useful reminder that the bee tests a child against a book, and that the book, in places, is undecided.
