🇺🇸 Doris Ann Hall

The second attempt

Hall had reached the national bee in 1951 and been eliminated on condign, an adjective meaning deserved or fitting, usually of a punishment. She returned in 1952 and won it, which is the ordinary route to a championship: the great majority of winners have been beaten at the national bee at least once before.

The Chicago Tribune reported the result on 23 May 1952 - a 13-year-old girl had won the spelling bee on vignette. Her home state paper, the Duplin Times, put it in state terms: the word had made a North Carolina girl a champion.

The prize and the stage

First prize was $500 and a loving cup, the two-handled trophy that was standard for American competitions of the period. Five hundred dollars in 1952 was a serious sum for a school-age competitor, roughly a season's wages in some of the jobs her neighbours held.

The bee then handed its champion to television. Hall appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Sunday evening variety programme that was the largest single audience in American broadcasting. A spelling champion was, for a week, a national celebrity in a way the modern competition no longer produces.

The runner-up's party trick

The runner-up that year, Marjorie Follart, could spell any word backwards - a detail the coverage enjoyed and the kind of skill that turns up regularly at the top of bees. It is not a trick but a symptom: a speller who holds a word as a fixed sequence of letters rather than as a sound can read it in either direction.

That habit of mind is what the competition selects for. Champions describe seeing words rather than hearing them, which is why they can spell terms whose meaning they do not know and whose pronunciation they have never encountered.

Vignette

Vignette is French, from vigne, a vine: originally the decorative vine-leaf borders printed around the text on a page, later a small illustration, later still a brief descriptive scene. The spelling trap is the doubled t and the terminal e, both standard once the French origin is recognised.

A competitor who has learned how French words are naturalised into English will spell it. One who has not will be guessing between three plausible endings. That difference is the whole competition.
