🇮🇳 Adhiraj Mitra

The first gold

The Commonwealth Chess Championship runs age-group sections alongside its open event, and Mitra's under-14 gold in 2025 was the first Commonwealth gold medal any Jharkhand player had won. He collected four Commonwealth under-14 medals across 2025 and 2026.

Firsts of that kind carry a specific meaning in Indian chess. The strength of the game is concentrated in a handful of states with established coaching networks, and a player emerging from outside them is doing so without the local infrastructure that produces most Indian titleholders.

Beating a grandmaster with black

In June 2026 he beat Grandmaster Nguyen Duc Hoa. ChessBase India recorded it as the first time a Jharkhand player had beaten a grandmaster with the black pieces.

The colour qualification is not a technicality. White moves first and holds a small but real initiative, and at grandmaster level the difference in practical results between the colours is significant enough that black's normal ambition against a stronger player is a draw. A 14-year-old rated 2280 winning with black against a grandmaster is a substantially harder result than the same score with white.

2280, and what it represents

His live FIDE rating in June 2026 was 2280, which ChessBase India described as the highest of any active player Jharkhand has produced. That is close to the 2300 threshold for the FIDE Master title.

A rating is the least glamorous number in chess and the most informative. It is a running measure calculated from results against rated opposition, it cannot be won in a single good weekend, and it does not care where a player is from. Being a state's highest-rated active player at 14 says something both about him and about the state's chess history.

An uncle for a coach

He is mentored by his uncle, FIDE Master Abhishek Das. In a state with no depth of coaching, a titled player inside the family is the difference between a promising child and a rated competitor.

This is the usual pattern outside the established chess centres. Where academies and full-time coaches do not exist locally, the players who emerge tend to come from households that already contain the expertise — which is why the geography of chess talent tracks the geography of chess teaching so closely, and why a first from any state is worth recording.

Where Adhiraj Mitra is now

As of June 2026 he was 14, rated 2280, holder of four Commonwealth under-14 medals including his state's first gold, and the first Jharkhand player to beat a grandmaster with black. That is the full extent of this record.

Why regional firsts matter in Indian chess

India now produces more elite junior chess players than any other country, but that production is not evenly spread. A dense calendar of national age-group championships means every Indian child who plays seriously gets measured against strong opposition several times a year, yet reaching those events from a state without academies means travelling for every rated game.

That is the barrier a player like Mitra is clearing in addition to the opponents. Each regional first — a state's first Commonwealth gold, its first win over a grandmaster — tends to be followed by local investment in coaching, which is how the map of Indian chess has kept widening. The immediate significance is a medal; the durable significance is that a fourteen-year-old in Jamshedpur has made the game visible where it was not.
