Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847, in Milan, Ohio, the youngest of seven children. He was a difficult student — hyperactive, distracted, perpetually asking questions his teachers found inconvenient. After three months in formal school, his mother Nancy, herself a former teacher, pulled him out and educated him at home. She gave him a chemistry textbook at age nine. He built a laboratory in the cellar by age ten. The pattern was established: Edison learned by doing, by breaking things, by asking what happened if you changed a variable. Formal education was simply too slow for the rate at which he wanted to run experiments.

At twelve he was selling newspapers and candy on the Grand Trunk Railroad, using a freight car as a mobile chemistry laboratory until a fire broke out and the conductor threw him off the train along with his equipment. By fifteen he was a telegraph operator, a skill he had learned after rescuing a stationmaster's son from a runaway freight car. The telegraph was the internet of the nineteenth century: a system for encoding information and transmitting it at the speed of electricity. Edison mastered it and immediately began trying to improve it. He invented a stock ticker that printed prices automatically. He sold the patent for $40,000 — an extraordinary sum in 1870 — and used the money to set up his first proper laboratory in Newark, New Jersey.

The Menlo Park laboratory, opened in 1876 in New Jersey, was something genuinely new in the history of technology. Earlier inventors had worked alone or in small teams, guided by inspiration and limited by resources. Edison industrialized the process. He hired machinists, chemists, mathematicians, and draftsmen. He stocked the lab with thousands of chemicals and materials so that any idea could be tested immediately. He famously declared that the lab would produce "a minor invention every ten days and a big thing every six months or so." He very nearly kept that promise. Menlo Park generated the carbon microphone, the phonograph, the practical incandescent light bulb, and the first commercial electrical power distribution system — all within six years.

The phonograph, unveiled in 1877, may have been Edison's most astonishing single invention in the public mind. The idea that a machine could record the human voice and play it back was so far outside common experience that many people who heard demonstrations refused to believe it was not a trick. Edison recited "Mary Had a Little Lamb," the machine played it back, and civilization crossed a threshold it had never before approached: the moment when sound ceased to be ephemeral, when a performance could outlast the performer. The implications for music, language, education, and memory were incomprehensible in 1877. They remain enormous today.

The incandescent light bulb is often credited entirely to Edison, but the real achievement was not the bulb itself — many inventors had made glowing filaments — but the system. Edison designed generators, copper distribution networks, junction boxes, fuses, meters, and sockets simultaneously. He understood that the bulb was useless without the infrastructure to power it. The first commercial power station, on Pearl Street in lower Manhattan, went online on September 4, 1882, supplying electricity to 59 customers and 400 bulbs. Within a year it had 508 customers and 12,732 bulbs. The modern city was being born in real time.

The War of Currents with Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse was Edison's most significant defeat. He had committed commercially and philosophically to direct current. When Tesla's alternating current proved capable of long-distance transmission that DC could not match, Edison did not adapt — he fought. He ran public campaigns depicting AC as dangerous, commissioned the electrocution of animals with AC current, and lobbied against the technology. He lost. The AC system became the global standard. Edison later called his opposition to AC the biggest mistake of his career.

He held 1,093 US patents when he died on October 18, 1931 — a record that stood for decades. But the deeper legacy is structural: Edison figured out how to manufacture innovation at scale. Every industrial research and development laboratory that exists today — every corporate R&D department, every national laboratory, every technology incubator — operates on the model he invented at Menlo Park in 1876. Before Edison, invention was individual. After him, it was institutional. That transformation may matter as much as any single device he ever built.

Edison's 1,093 patents are the most visible measure of his achievement, but the deeper legacy is structural. Before Menlo Park, invention was a craft practiced by gifted individuals working largely alone. Edison made it an industry — a repeatable, resourced, systematic process of moving from idea to prototype to product at a pace no solo inventor could match. Every technology company with a research division, every pharmaceutical company running drug trials, every university laboratory with a team of postdocs, is operating inside the model Edison built in New Jersey.

His Pearl Street power station of 1882 is the ancestor of every electrical utility on Earth. The specific technology was superseded within a decade by Tesla's AC system. But the business model — the concept of electricity as a metered commodity delivered to homes and businesses on demand — is Edison's and it still governs how power is distributed globally. The world is wired the way it is partly because of choices Edison made in lower Manhattan in 1882.
