A round number, and a fast one

Two details define the entry. The first is the total: exactly 20,000 digits, a figure that suggests a target set in advance and reached rather than an attempt that ran until it failed. The second is the duration, two hours and fifty-seven minutes, which works out at roughly 113 digits a minute held for almost three hours.

That rate is the fastest recorded among the list's leading attempts. Luca Vadacca's 22,801 digits are listed at seven hours, around fifty-four a minute. Paul Hearding's 30,448 are listed at twenty-seven hours and forty-three minutes, around eighteen a minute. The list does not state whether the times were measured on comparable terms, so the comparison is offered as the table presents it.

A continental record

The note attached to the entry reads South American Record 2021. The Pi World Ranking List uses that column to mark results that stand as national or continental bests, and it applies the same convention to Vadacca's Italian record and Hearding's North American one.

A continental marker is a stronger claim than a national one and says something about the geography of the discipline. The table's leading entries come overwhelmingly from India, China and Japan, with a scattering from Europe and North America. Vergara Vial's 20,000 digits stand as the benchmark for an entire continent.

Where it sits on the list

Sixteenth place is a long way beneath the summit, and the summit is worth stating to give the position meaning. Suresh Kumar Sharma of India leads with 70,030 digits from 2015, Rajveer Meena of India follows with 70,000 from the same year, and Chao Lu of China holds third with 67,890 from 2005.

The upper half of the table is stubborn. Hiroyuki Goto's 42,195 digits date from 1995, Hideaki Tomoyori's 40,000 from 1987 and Rajan Mahadevan's 31,811 from 1981. Against a list where results from the 1980s still hold top-ten places, an entry from 2021 is a recent arrival.

What is documented — and what is not

The firm facts are the digit count of 20,000, the date of 19 March 2021, the listed duration of two hours and fifty-seven minutes, the country, the sixteenth-place ranking and the South American record note. All of them are published by the Pi World Ranking List.

Nothing else is. The list carries a rules page that was not retrieved for this record, so the verification standard behind the entry is not described here. It gives no age, birth year, city or occupation, names no venue or official, and says nothing about how long Vergara Vial prepared or what he has done since.

What reciting twenty thousand digits requires

Pi is incompressible, which is the whole difficulty. There is no rule that generates the next digit from the last, so a recitation of this length is the ordered retrieval of twenty thousand arbitrary symbols with no way to reconstruct a lost position. Memory techniques convert the digits into images or words in advance, but the conversion itself has to be memorised too.

The consequence is that speed and length pull against each other. A faster pace leaves less time to recover from a hesitation, and a single unrecoverable one ends the attempt. Reaching an exact target of 20,000 at 113 digits a minute is a result built on the recall being effectively automatic rather than deliberate.
