🇬🇧 Issy Simpson

Eight years old, second in the country, and 6.7 points behind the winner in front of ten million people.

Britain's Got Talent, 3 June 2017: Issy Simpson took 17.5 percent of the final vote.

Britain's Got Talent has produced very few finalists young enough to need a booster seat at the judges' desk. On 3 June 2017 an eight-year-old illusionist came second in the whole competition. Issy Simpson took 17.5 percent of the public vote in the series 11 final, behind the pianist Tokio Myers on 24.2 percent, in front of an audience of 10.07 million.

The final

The result was close by the standards of the show. Myers won with 24.2 percent; Simpson finished on 17.5; the comedian Daliso Chaponda came third on 14.7. Everybody else in an eleven-act final was in single figures. The Daily Telegraph's headline on the night put it in exactly those terms: Tokio Myers triumphs, just ahead of magician Issy Simpson.

She had arrived there by winning her semi-final outright. In the second of the five semi-finals, held between 29 May and 2 June 2017, she took the public vote, which meant she went through without needing the judges. That is the harder of the two routes into a Britain's Got Talent final.

The youngest in the room

The series 11 final was unusually wide in age. Simpson was eight. So was the comedian Ned Woodman, who finished tenth. At the other end of the line-up stood The Pensionalities, a singing duo aged 84 and 75, who came fifth.

Her act is listed as illusion rather than close-up magic, which is a distinction of scale: illusions are built for a theatre and a camera rather than for a table. An eight-year-old performing them on a live ITV final, with a studio audience and ten million people watching at home, is a nerve test before it is a technical one.

The series she was part of

Series 11 ran its auditions from 15 April to 27 May 2017, averaging around eleven million viewers, before five semi-finals and the final on 3 June. The judging panel was David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell; Ant and Dec presented on ITV, with Stephen Mulhern on ITV2.

Five golden buzzers were handed out that year, to Sarah Ikumu, MerseyGirls, Daliso Chaponda, Matt Edwards and Kyle Tomlinson. Simpson was not among them. She reached the final on votes alone, which is worth noting: the golden buzzer is a shortcut, and she did not take one.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: her age, her act, the semi-final she won, her second place with 17.5 percent, the winner and the margin, the size of the audience and the date.

Not documented in the sources gathered here: her home town, her school, her family, how she trained, who taught her the illusions, and what she has done since June 2017. There is no Wikipedia article in her own name. A runner-up on a national talent show is one of the most visible people in Britain for about a week and then, in records terms, one of the least traceable.

What second place is worth

The winner of Britain's Got Talent takes the prize and the Royal Variety Performance slot. The runner-up takes the exposure and nothing contractual, which is why the two positions diverge so sharply afterwards even when the vote between them was narrow.

In this case the gap was 6.7 percentage points out of a final that four acts could plausibly have won. What the record shows is the outcome of one night's voting by the British public, and it shows it precisely. What it cannot show is what an eight-year-old did with the year that followed, and no source here attempts to.
